They love to hate Cristiano Ronaldo in England
LIKE the dribbling (带球) and passing skills that have made him one of the world's best footballers, Cristiano Ronaldo's shooting has matured with age. The Manchester United midfielder is currently the Premier League's top goal scorer with 21 goals.
But despite performances as beautiful as they have been ruthless (毫不留情的), Ronaldo is a disliked figure in England. "I hate Ronaldo" was one of the most popular phrases Googled last year in Britain.
The Daily Mail once wrote: "Get lost Ronaldo. English football will be better without ...this spiteful (恶毒的) boy." Britain's The Sun even printed a picture of Ronaldo's head on a dartboard (镖靶), encouraging its readers to "give Ron one in the eye".
The hatred towards Ronaldo is arguably of his own making. He can be devious (狡猾的) on the pitch. Often deliberately (故意地) falling over to trick the referee into giving him free kicks or penalties (点球).
English fans will never forgive him for encouraging the referee to send off his Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney in a World Cup game between England and Portugal two years ago. The incident was made worse by his "job done" wink (眨眼) to the Portugal manager.
However, in many ways, Ronaldo is the complete player. His accurate passes and eye for goal shame many top strikers. The scariest thing is: He is just 23 years old. Even the people that hate him agree he is only going to get better.
